Upper Gallery: “99 Days Until Childbirth” by Abra Karbin
Local artist and ceramicists Abra Karbin opens her first solo exhibition this July featuring a new body of work created during quarantine. Abra had recently found out she was pregnant and was lucky enough to be able to continue producing through this phase when the rest of the world seemed to screech to a halt. At a time surrounded by uncertainty, sadness, and fear, Abra’s work was an attempt to bring brightness, love and joy back into this world. It was also a time to come to terms not only with a changing world but a major change in her life. 99 Days Until Childbirth represents the will to keep making, being and living true to oneself.
- Join the artist for a gallery opening on Friday, July 3 between 5 – 8 pm.
- Groups of 25 will get to attend for 30 minute intervals – following social distancing guidelines, we ask that all guests wear a face covering please.
More About the Artist:
Abra Karbin Ceramics
My primary focus as an artist is pottery. I consider myself a painter and also have tattooing experience. I have finally been able to incorporate my three passions into my ceramic work, which is the focus of this exhibit. My goals in ceramics are to keep exploring new techniques for surface design, to continue establishing my style, and to continue expanding my audience.
I was raised in the north suburbs of Chicago. Growing up I focused on drawing and painting. I went on to expand my artistic breadth at Illinois State University where I studied ceramics, glass blowing, graphic design, oil painting, and fiber dying. I then studied in Florence, Italy where studied figure drawing and fresco painting. When I returned from Florence I finished my undergraduate degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) where I focused on sculptural ceramics. I also took on a tattooing apprenticeship while I was at SAIC. I tattooed in Chicago, Gunnison and Crested Butte for a total of seven years but have decided to focus my creative energies on ceramics.
This is my first solo exhibit, thank you for taking the time to check out my artwork. If you’d like to check out more of my artwork and keep current with what I’m up to please check out my facebook page, Abra Karbin Ceramics, my instagram @abra_karbin_ceramics, or my etsy shop Abrakarbinceramics. I take on custom commissions but please allow at least 2 to 4 weeks for production. Thank you for your ongoing support and encouragement of my dreams.
You can find my work locally in the Gunnison Valley at The Shop at the Gunnison Arts Center, The Toggery Elevated, and Resilient Threads.
