Youth, Adult, and Events

The Gunnison Arts Center Visual Arts Program offers youth and adults a variety of classes to choose from year-round. The after-school art classes for youth compliment and build upon skills learned in the K-12 art programs, offering opportunities to work in a variety of mediums. Weekend workshops for residents, regional artists and visitors are offered throughout the year. There is always a new class to choose from as well as continuing favorites. The GAC brings visiting artists from around the country to share their techniques with art students of all levels in the Gunnison Valley.

Cancellation and Refund Policy:
The Gunnison Arts Center will issue a full refund for the price of class or workshop registration, minus a $5 administration fee, until the class has begun and will only issue Gunnison Arts Center credit after the class has begun. The Gunnison Arts Center will not issue refunds for event tickets under any circumstances.

Enrollment:
All classes have a minimum enrollment of 4 students unless otherwise noted. If the minimum is not met the decision to cancel a class will be made. Some classes have limited enrollment. Students are considered registered only after full payment for the class has been received. GAC active members will receive a 15% discount on class tuition.



Youth Art Classes

Comic Books/Sequential Arts ~ (Ages 13 +)
Tuesdays, 4:30 – 6:30 pm. January 22 – February 26.

Students will learn drawing, inking and shading techniques used by comic book artists to create their very own story line. Concepts of caricature drawing, cartoon and sketching will also be explored. Students will finish their own comic book by the end of this six week class. GAC Kids Art Studio.

Art Spark ~ (Ages 5 – 7)
Thursdays, 4:30 – 5:30 pm. February 7 – March 14.

In this six week class, students will be exploring various mediums by completing a new project every day. Min. 4 students to run. Instructor: Lauren Dolloff. $70.00/student, $59.50/member.

Wire Jewelry ~ (Ages 7+)
Wednesdays, 4:30 – 6:30 pm. February 20 & 27.

Create your very own one of a kind jewelry! In this class, students will master the basics of wire wrapping and beading to craft unique and fun jewelry.
Instructor: Deirdre Jones. $50/ student, $42.50/members includes all supplies.




Discover Drawing ~ (Ages 8 – 14)
Mondays, 4:30 – 6:30 pm. March 4 – April 1. (No class 3/18)

In this four day workshop, students will follow a fun and easy progression of drawing exercises designed to build technical skills, as well as develop the ability to interpret our world around us on paper. Experienced students will be given extra challenges. Each student will receive a drawing kit and sketch book that will be theirs to keep after class.
Instructor: Kora Gibson. $75/student, $63.75/member.



Discover Watercolors ~ (Ages 9 – 12)
Tuesdays, 4:30 – 6:30 pm. April 2 – April 23.

Students will explore the infinite world of watercolor painting by learning about different, creative techniques that professionals use. The possibilities are endless, come explore them with us! GAC Kids Art Studio.
Instructor: Lauren Dolloff. $75/student, $63.75/member includes all supplies.






Discover Pastels ~ (Ages 8 – 14)
Mondays, 4:30 – 6:30 pm. April 22 – June 3. (No class 5/27)

In this six-week course students will explore the medium of chalk pastel on colored papers to create beautiful landscapes, still life drawings and more. No technical drawing skills are needed to succeed with this medium. You will go home with a number of finished pieces ready to showcase and even frame. Min. 4 students to run. GAC Kids Art Studio.

Adult Art Classes

Crochet: Beginner & Intermediate ~ (Ages 14 +)
Mondays, 6:00 – 8:00 pm. January 28 – February 18.

Learn the art of crocheting with Kora Gibson and get hooked on a new hobby! Students will learn basic crochet terminology, the single crochet stitch and the double crochet stitch. Open to all levels. Experienced students will be given extra challenges. Please bring a crochet hook size H or purchase it through the GAC. Minimum 4 students to run.

Up Cycled Resin Jewelry Workshop
Saturday, February 16. 9:00 am – 1:00 pm.

In this single day workshop, students will learn how to take apart old jewelry and rearrange the components inside new shapes with colorful backgrounds, and then preserve them in doming resin. It’s easy and fun!
Instructor: Deirdre Jones. $55.00/Student, $46.75/member.




Figure Drawing ~ (Ages 18+)
Mondays, 6:00 – 8:00 pm. February 25 – March 18.

Are you looking for that perfect opportunity to dust off your drawing tools and find a community of drawers? Artists of all experience levels are invited to join these single day live model drawing sessions. These fun, professional Monday night sessions will include light instruction and are intended to be an open practice time for artists to hone their skills. Students will need to bring their own drawing supplies; easels and drawing boards will be provided. Minimum 4 students to run.

Make a Splash Watercolor: Beginner and Intermediate
Mondays & Wednesdays, 6:00 – 8:00 pm. March 25 – April 10.

Discover the magic of watercolor painting! Students will learn brushstroke techniques, while also learning the value of light and shadow to add drama to your paintings. All levels welcome. Experienced students will be given extra challenges.

Calligraphy: The Art of Beautiful Writing
Wednesdays, 6:00 – 8:00 pm. May 1 – May 22.

Do you need something meditative, beautiful and creative in your life? Come learn the art of Calligraphy and find out how many ways beautiful handwriting will enrich your world. Create designer signs, envelopes, cards, letter, posters, personalized notes and more…by hand! You’ll leave this class with the skills you need and your own set of materials.. Minimum 4 students to run.

Mother’s Day Banners – Family Friendly Workshop
Saturday, May 11. 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.

This Mother’s Day weekend, join us at the Arts Center for some great family fun! Learn about colors and design principles to create a one of a kind mother’s day banner that will be ready to hang on Sunday.
Instructor: Theresa Ely. $55/parent and 1 child, $15/each additional person.




Art Events



Artist Forum
Wednesdays, 2:00 pm. March 13th, June 12th, Sept 11th and Dec 11th.

Come meet fellow multi media artists for a fun gathering which includes sharing, viewing, critiquing and creating art. Bring samples of your recent art and join us! The Artist Forum is held on the 2nd Wednesday at 2 pm on the 3rd, 6th, 9th and 12th months of year.
