Visual Arts Programs

The Gunnison Arts Center Visual Arts Program offers youth and adults a variety of classes to choose from year-round. The after-school art classes for youth compliment and build upon skills learned in the K-12 art programs, offering opportunities to work in a variety of mediums. Weekend workshops for residents, regional artists and visitors are offered throughout the year. There is always a new class to choose from as well as continuing favorites. The GAC brings visiting artists from around the country to share their techniques with art students of all levels in the Gunnison Valley.

Cancellation and Refund Policy:
The Gunnison Arts Center will issue a full refund for the price of class or workshop registration, minus a $5 administration fee, until the class has begun and will only issue Gunnison Arts Center credit after the class has begun. The Gunnison Arts Center will not issue refunds for event tickets under any circumstances.

Enrollment:
All classes have a minimum enrollment of 4 students unless otherwise noted. If the minimum is not met the decision to cancel a class will be made. Some classes have limited enrollment. Students are considered registered only after full payment for the class has been received. GAC active members will receive a 15% discount on class tuition.

Lil’ Ladies Henna Workshop ~ (Ages 7+)
Friday, May 12. 6:30 – 8:00 pm.

Spend the evening with just the ladies! Bring your daughter, niece, granddaughter or best friend to this fun Friday night workshop. Students get to learn the art of henna and even practice drawing designs on each others hand or feet. Perfect for sandal weather! Pre-registration required due to henna preparation. Instructor: Emily Cardile. $15/person.




Plein Air Watercolor ~ (Ages 11 – 16) ~ TWO SESSIONS!
Wednesdays, 4:00 – 5:30 pm.
Session #1: June 14 – June 28
Session #2: July 19 – August 7

Plein air painting involves a mixture of watercolor and pen and ink drawings of landscapes and urban scenes. Learn to draw and paint on site, al fresco studying open land and buildings. Students will meet at the GAC and travel on foot with the instructor to various locations within a few blocks of the GAC. Pre-registration required. Instructor: Emily Cardile. $55/session.








Art Fusion Fridays ~ (Ages 7 – 13) ~ PUNCH CARDS AVAILABLE!
Fridays, 12:30 – 2:00 pm. June 16 – August 25.

Featuring a new and unique project each week, kids will have the opportunity to get hands-on with creative lessons ranging from up-cycled collages to duct tape art. Theses classes are designed to expand creativity, teach kids how to work in a group and support individual expression. Instructor: Emily Cardile.
$100 / full 11 weeks, $80 / 8 weeks, $55 / 5 weeks, $38 / 3 weeks, $13 / drop-in. Punch cards may be shared by siblings and friends.









Toddler Art N’ Dance ~ (Ages 2 – 3 w/ caregiver)
Fridays, 9:00 – 9:45 am. June 16 – August 18.

Discover, move and create in these fun Friday morning classes for your toddler and you! One week will be a dance class and the next will be an art class. Kids will have the opportunity to experience creative lessons in a different art form each week. Art classes will be held on the outdoor courtyard (weather permitting) and dance classes will be held in the GAC Dance Studio. Parents are encouraged to join and participate. Purchase a full summer punch card or smaller punch cards. Classes begin with Art on June 16. Art Instructor: Emily Cardile, Dance Instructor: Victoria Goedjen.
$85/full 10 week class, $60/6 classes, $35/3 classes or $13/drop-in. Punch cards may be shared with siblings and friends (only within the Toddler class.)









Preschool Art N’ Dance ~ (Ages 4 – 6)
Fridays, 10:00 – 10:45 am. June 16 – August 18.

ArtHouse Teen Art Camp ~ (Ages 13 – 18)
Wednesday – Friday, July 25 – 27. 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.

Teens will have a blast in this fun summer art camp. Students will start and finish a project each morning, creating three finished pieces of art. Bring your friends for fun creative summer projects. No art experience necessary. Instructor: Emily Cardile. Camp $55/student.








Parade Prep Party Camp ~ (Ages 7 – 14)
Tuesday – Friday, July 10 – 14. 1:00 – 4:00 pm.
Cattlemen’s Day Parade: Saturday, July 15. 8:00 am meet & registration.

Come along to design, mold and create an impressive float for the Cattleman’s Day Parade! Lend your skills and imagination to build a one-of-a kind parade float. Begin by working as a group to design a theme, and then spend the week crafting, painting, gluing and decorating. Participants will have the opportunity to ride or walk alongside the float and hand out candy in the official Cattleman’s Day parade on Saturday, July 15th. Please provide a t-shirt to tie-dye. Min. 6 students. Instructor: Emily Cardile. $40/student or 2 for $70.



Adult Art Classes

Beginners & Int/Adv. Combined: Wednesdays, 6:30 – 8:30 pm.
Session #2 March 29 – May 3.

Discover the art of fly tying! Merne Judson, a Whitling Farms Pro Instructor with 40 years’ experience will instruct this exciting art form twice a week at the GAC. Each 2-hour class students will start and finish tied flies ready to take home and use. The beginner’s course will take students through each step of how to tie both wet and dry flies. The intermediate/advanced course is suited for the more advanced tier and will introduce techniques and materials to improve their ability to tie more advanced patterns. GAC Adult Art Studio. Intermediate/Advanced: Mondays, 6:00 – 8:30 pm. May 1 – June 12. No class 5/29.

Discover the magic of watercolor painting in our Monday beginner’s course. Learn to see like an artist, develop basic drawing and brushstroke techniques while also learning the value of light and shadow to add drama to your paintings. In our Intermediate/Advanced class students will take on more advanced watercolor projects. Students must know proper technique to take this course. This is an opportunity to expand your creativity, to learn more difficult techniques and to learn from fellow artists. Tuesdays, 6:00 – 7:30 pm. May 2 – May 30. No class 5/16.

Join us for a drawing class specific to the classic medium of charcoal. Using toned paper with charcoal and pencils students will learn drawing, 3-D shading, how to create textures while experimenting with four different kinds of subject matter; still life, portraits, landscape, and figure. Saturday, May 13th 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Come explore this new medium with us! Experiment with the movements of alcohol inks on Yupo paper, enjoy the vivid colors, and learn new techniques in painting with alcohol ink. In this workshop, students will be able to complete a set of 4 notecards that would make a great Mother’s Day gift! Appetizers provided in this 4 hour workshop. GAC Adult Art Studio. The Art of Relaxation
Thursdays, June 22 – July 13. 6:00 – 7:30 pm.

The Art of Relaxation is a specialized art where students are guided to relax the body, part by part, systematically. The class structure will include a mindful activity (art, yoga, or writing) and a guided meditation. Highly beneficial for combating stress, the Art of Relaxation is an excellent way to achieve deep physical and mental relaxation and experience increased calmness, happiness, and creativity. Plein Air Watercolor Painting – SINGLE DAY CLASSES
Saturdays, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm.
July 15, August 5, and/or September 16.

Enjoy spending a Saturday morning at one of Gunnison’s many scenic locations to paint plein air with a small group of fellow watercolor enthusiasts. You’ll be guided through various tips for working plein air while experiencing the joys and challenges of plein air painting. Locations TBD, meet at GAC. Instructor: Karen Hill. $45/single day, $120/3 days.










The Art of Relaxation Workshop
Saturday, September 9. 9:30 am – 12:00 pm.

When it comes to creativity, are you able to relax and let insecurities go? Learn how to practice the Art of Relaxation in this mindfulness workshop that will give you tools to clear the mind so creativity flows. We will start out with a mindful doodling activity, stretch it out with some easy restorative yoga for the hands and shoulders, and end with a long guided meditation. You’ll leave restored with tools to strengthen the mind and relax the body. Please bring a yoga mat/pad and blanket. Instructor: Mary Burt. $45.

Wednesdays @ Western Extended Studies Courses: SINGLE DAY CLASSES
Western State Colorado University’s Extended Studies program invites your to create a masterpiece each Wednesday this summer. These courses provide opportunities for visitors and residents to spend the day learning about the Gunnison Valley while enjoying a creative, hands-on project. No experience necessary, all art supplies are included. All classes will meet at the GAC.

Functional Pottery: Light Switch Covers – June 14, 1:00 – 4:00 pm.
Join us back in the Clay Studio for these one day clay projects and learn to make ceramic pieces that you can use everyday. With a mix of hand-building, wheel throwing, and multimedia techniques items such as light covers, buttons, and coasters are created. Instructor: Veronica Wilde. $35.

Back by popular demand! Explore ways to combine text with image using creative expression, visual design principles, and art techniques. Bringing The Art Masters Alive – Wednesdays, 3:00 – 5:00 pm.
June 21, July 5, July 19, August 2.

Do you love art? Bring it alive through creative discovery. Take a multimedia approach to exploring periods, movements, geography, and master artists through making art. No prerequisite; each session is a stand-alone class with new content each week Emphasis is on creative expression and discovery. All levels welcome; beginners will be given extra support; experienced artists are given design challenges to deepen their understanding. 5 sessions, classes need not be taken sequentially. Creative Accordion Books – June 28, 1:00 – 4:00 pm.
The accordion book comes to us from Asia. It was invented to accommodate scrolls that had become unmanageable because of their size and length. The accordion book is composed of a continuous folded sheet of paper and is often enclosed between two covers. It can either be expanded outward and displayed or kept flat. Class participants create a decorative 6-page accordion book that highlights their favorite quote. Please bring a 6 – 20 word quote of your choosing; preselected quotes will be available. Accordion books are made of paper, canvas, and ribbon. Not art experience necessary. Instructor: Renata Sieck. $55.

Get inspired by the beauty of the outdoors and tap into your creative side in this enjoyable chalk pastel drawing workshop. Batik Prayer Flags – July 26, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. (1 hr. lunch)
In this fun and easy workshop participants lean how to stamp and design patterns on fabric and use colorful dye baths to create a custom set of prayer flags to use as home décor. The morning session will be spent learning how to stamp and dye the fabrics and the afternoon session will be spent finishing the pieces and sewing them onto a cord to hang. Most of the day will be spent outside on the GAC courtyard, so dress appropriately and bring a water bottle. Instructor: Gail Sovick. $35.

The community will be celebrating and you should be too! Come create a unique piece of art on a pre-assembled wood pallet. Great to give as a gift or make one to keep. Celebrating WSCU and GHS grads, this pallet party will give options to use names, class dates, and school pride colors. While sipping different pinot’s students will complete two canvases based on paper collage techniques including, cut-outs, torn paper, and origami.
