Youth, Adult, and Events

The Gunnison Arts Center Visual Arts Program offers youth and adults a variety of classes to choose from year-round. The after-school art classes for youth compliment and build upon skills learned in the K-12 art programs, offering opportunities to work in a variety of mediums. Weekend workshops for residents, regional artists and visitors are offered throughout the year. There is always a new class to choose from as well as continuing favorites. The GAC brings visiting artists from around the country to share their techniques with art students of all levels in the Gunnison Valley.

Cancellation and Refund Policy:
The Gunnison Arts Center will issue a full refund for the price of class or workshop registration, minus a $5 administration fee, until the class has begun and will only issue Gunnison Arts Center credit after the class has begun. The Gunnison Arts Center will not issue refunds for event tickets under any circumstances.

Enrollment:
All classes have a minimum enrollment of 4 students unless otherwise noted. If the minimum is not met the decision to cancel a class will be made. Some classes have limited enrollment. Students are considered registered only after full payment for the class has been received. GAC active members will receive a 15% discount on class tuition.

Youth Art Classes

Toddler Art n’ Dance ~ (Ages 2 – 3 w/ caregiver)
Fridays, 9:00 – 9:45 am. June 15 – August 10.


Preschool Art n’ Dance ~ (Ages 4 – 6)
Fridays, 10:00 – 10:45 am. June 15 – August 10.


Discover, move and create in these fun Friday morning classes for your toddler and you! One week will be a dance class and the next will be an art class. Kids will have the opportunity to experience creative lessons in a different art form each week. Art classes will be held on the outdoor courtyard (weather permitting) and dance classes will be held in the GAC Dance Studio. Parents are encouraged to join and participate. Purchase a full summer punch card or smaller punch cards. Classes begin with Art on June 15.

Kids Plein Air Watercolor – Single Day Classes ~ (Ages 11 – 16)
Saturdays, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm. June 16, July 21 and/or August 4.

Make the most of Gunnison’s beautiful summers and join us once a month to learn a new watercolor technique! Learn to draw and paint on site studying open land and buildings. Students will meet at the GAC and travel on foot with the instructor to various locations within a few blocks of the GAC. Meet at GAC Kids Art Studio.
Instructor: Lauren Dolloff. $40/single day class, $105/all three. $34/single day class members, $89.25/all three members.



ArtVentures Youth Camp ~ (Ages 9 – 12)
Monday – Wednesday, 1:00 – 3:00 pm. June 18 – 20.

Let your creativity fly in this fun art camp. Students will have the opportunity to learn different styles, techniques and mediums of art by completing a new project every day.
Instructor: Lauren Dolloff. $55/student, $46.75/member.




Digital Animation Camp ~ (Ages 12 – 18)
Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. June 25 – 29.
Final Film Showing: Friday, June 29th at 2:00 pm in the Black Box Theatre.

This popular camp is back! Stepping it up for seasoned animators and catering to beginners, students learn the fundamentals of animation from filmmaker Katherine Hadar. Participants explore traditional stop-animation, Claymation, hand-drawn animation, digital film and computer graphics like titling and film effects to bring a short story to life. Students will need to bring a basic digital camera or iPad, iPhone or Smartphone. If available, bring laptop or tablet with iMovie or iPhoto programs. Students should also bring a sack lunch every day. Min. 8 students to run camp. Instructor: Katie Hadar. $185/student, $157.25/members.



ArtHouse Teen Camp ~ (Ages 13 – 18)
Monday – Wednesday, 1:00 – 3:00 pm. July 16 – 18.

Teens will have a blast in this fun summer art camp. Students will start and finish a project each afternoon, creating three finished pieces of art. Bring your friends for fun creative summer projects. No art experience necessary.

Mixed Media Mondays ~ (Ages 4 – 6)
Mondays, 10:00 – 10:45 am. July 30 – August 20.

August is the month to explore different mediums! Every Monday, your little ones will have the opportunity to experiment with chalk, charcoal, pen, paint, pencil, and more to create one of a kind artwork. This class will tap into your child’s imagination and will strengthen their artistic confidence.

Adult Art Classes

Make a Splash Watercolor: Intermediate & Advanced
Wednesdays, 6:00 – 8:30 pm. June 6 – July 18. (No class 7/4)

Jump into the world of watercolor! Students will learn more advanced brushstroke techniques and will be given extra challenges to take your watercolor paintings to the next level.
Instructor: Karen Hill. $120/student, $102/member includes all supplies.




Plein Air Watercolor Painting – Single Day Classes
Saturdays, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm. June 9, July 7, and/or August 11.

Enjoy spending a Saturday morning at one of Gunnison’s many scenic locations to paint plein air with a small group of fellow watercolor enthusiasts. You’ll be guided through various tips for working plein air while experiencing the joys and challenges of plein air painting. Locations TBD, meet at GAC.
Instructor: Karen Hill. $50/single day class, $135/all three. $42.50/single day class members, $114.75/all three members. Prices include all supplies.


Sweet Shots – Photography for Parents
Wednesdays, 4:00 – 6:00 pm. June 20 & 27.

Join local photographer Erin Jacobs for this “mom”ography class to learn everything you need to know to take beautiful photographs of your little ones. Each student should bring a digital camera of their choice (cellphone, DSLR, regular camera, etc). First day of class will be spent in the class room, the second day of class will be spent at Jorgensen Park to practice your new skills. Bring the little ones to the second day of class for pictures!

Ikebana: Introduction to Japanese Flower Arranging
Tuesday – Thursday, 9:00 am – 11:00 am. July 10 – 12.

Discover the beauty of Japanese flower arranging in this three day workshop. Our instructor will guide us through the history of Ikebana and the principles of flower selection, length of flowers and kenzan placement. Students go home with a completed arrangement of real flowers to cherish and display. Bring your own vase or purchase it through the GAC.

Joyful Pages: Mixed Media Journaling with Judith Cassel-Mamet
Saturday, July 28. 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. Registration deadline: July 26.

Do you love mixing media and a playful approach to your creative expression? Do you have some precious blank books at home but don’t know how to start getting some life into the pages? Join Judith for Joyful Pages: Mixed Media Art Journaling and experience 4 hours of pure fun! We will spray, stamp and rip our pages and create delicious textures in our art journals. No experience in sketching or writing needed; this class if for beginners and experienced art journal enthusiasts alike. Your registration fee covers everything except your personal book (Judith will have a few for sale at the beginning of class in case you’d like to purchase one). Bring a lunch; all other materials will be provided. Minimum 6 students to run.

Oil Painting on the Courtyard
Tuesdays, 6:00 – 8:00 pm. August 7 – September 11.

Have you always wanted to try out oil painting? Then this is your chance. Students of all levels will explore the basics of oil painting and will leave with the knowledge of composition, drawing, and using oil paints to add color and texture. Students will leave with a finished still-life painting ready to mount.
Instructor: Molly Darby. $125/student, $106.50/member includes all supplies.




Wednesdays @ Western
Western State Colorado University’s Extended Studies program invites you to create a masterpiece each Wednesday this summer. These courses provide opportunities for visitors and residents to spend the day learning about the Gunnison Valley while enjoying a creative, hands-on project. No experience is necessary, all art supplies are included. Register online or call (970)943-2885. Pre-registration is required.

Water & Wax Pastel Wild Flowers (CRN 15634)
Wednesday, June 27. 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.
Spend a day surrounded by the beautiful mountains of Crested Butte while learning how to use water soluble pastels to create a gorgeous wildflower picture. Participants leave the class with knowledge of a new technique and a finished painting. Please bring a lunch, water and sun protection. Location TBD, meet at GAC. Minimum 8 students to run.

Watercolor @ the Park (CRN 15637)
Wednesday, July 18. 1:00 – 3:30 pm.

Discover the magic of watercolor painting by spending a relaxing afternoon at the park learning about watercolor paints, brushes and values. All levels welcome. Participants meet at the gazebo in Jorgensen Park, Gunnison. Minimum 4 students to run.

Ceramic Wind Chimes (CRN 29859)
Wednesday, August 15. 11:00 am – 1:00 pm.

Join us at the Gunnison Arts Center’s Clay Studio to create a one-of-a-kind ceramic wind chime you’ll be proud to take home. Participants learn hand-building and glazing techniques. All work is fired in our kilns and is available for pick-up one week after class. Minimum 4 students to run
