Visual Arts Programs

The Gunnison Arts Center Visual Arts Program offers youth and adults a variety of classes to choose from year-round. The after-school art classes for youth compliment and build upon skills learned in the K-12 art programs, offering opportunities to work in a variety of mediums. Weekend workshops for residents, regional artists and visitors are offered throughout the year. There is always a new class to choose from as well as continuing favorites. The GAC brings visiting artists from around the country to share their techniques with art students of all levels in the Gunnison Valley.

Cancellation and Refund Policy:
The Gunnison Arts Center will issue a full refund for the price of class or workshop registration, minus a $5 administration fee, until the class has begun and will only issue Gunnison Arts Center credit after the class has begun. The Gunnison Arts Center will not issue refunds for event tickets under any circumstances.

All classes have a minimum enrollment of 4 students unless otherwise noted. If the minimum is not met the decision to cancel a class will be made. Some classes have limited enrollment. Students are considered registered only after full payment for the class has been received. GAC active members will receive a 15% discount on class tuition.

Youth Art Classes


Arting Around Afterschool Art
Mondays, 4:15 – 5:15 pm.
Session #1 Winter January 23 – March 27. No class 2/20 & 3/20.
Session #2 Spring April 3 – May 22

Mondays are arting around days at the Arts Center! Let your creativity flow in this fun afterschool art class for kids. Students will have the opportunity to learn different styles, techniques and mediums of art and create finished pieces to take home. These classes will tap into your child’s imagination, build self-confidence and strengthen cognitive development for a well-rounded education. GAC Kids Art Studio.

Lil Ladies Workshops
Fridays, 6:30 – 8:00 pm.
January 27 – Bracelets

May 12 – Henna

Spend some time with just the ladies! These Friday evening workshops are geared towards the little ladies of the valley to spend one on one time with moms, mentors, aunts, grandmas, or older sisters. Learn intricate friendship bracelets, painting on mini canvas, and the art of henna. GAC Adult Art Studio.

Friday Afternoon Art Start
Fridays, 2:15 – 3:30 pm. February 3 – May 26. Every other Friday.

Take a moment and create some art with your little one! Join us after naptime, before the kids get out of school and work on a project together.
You and your little artists will play and experiment with several mediums as well as learning fundamental art skills. GAC Kids Art Studio.

Youth Painting
Wednesdays, 4:15 – 5:30 pm. February 1 – March 15. No class 3/1.

Get ready to paint in a whole new way with this fun youth painting class! Learn to paint with inspiration from six different master painters, a different one each week! Students will bring home a finished painting at the end of each class, along with the knowledge learned about each professional.

Street Art
Fridays, 5:30 – 7:30 pm. April 7 – April 28.

Following our Friday event, Street Art AND Soda, this 4 week course will serve as an introduction to graffiti and street art. Students will learn techniques of stenciling, stickers, proper letter forming and structure as well as safely working with aerosol. This Friday night class is intended for kids to have a fun “Friday night out” while exploring this unique and often misunderstood art form. GAC Adult Art Studio.

Adult Art Classes

relax-1The Art of Relaxation
Saturday, January 7th 10:00 – 11:30 am.

When it comes to creativity, are you able to relax and let insecurities go? Learn how to practice the Art of Relaxation in this mindfulness workshop that will give you tools to clear the mind so creativity flows. We will start out with a mindful doodling activity, stretch it out with some easy restorative yoga for the hands and shoulders, and end with a long guided meditation. You’ll leave restored with tools to strengthen the mind and relax the body. Please bring a yoga mat/pad and blanket. GAC Dance Studio. Instructor: Mary Burt.

Session #1: Tuesdays, 6:30 – 8:30 pm. January 24, 31 and Feb 7, 14.
Session #2: Tuesdays, 6:30 – 8:30 pm. April 4 – 25.

Professional artist Bren Corn will explore the palette knife and the use of acrylic paints in this 4 week course. Each class students will complete an entire painting using selective colors while learning artistic knife skills. Mixing and manipulating color to build a composition is the base of creating impressionistic pieces. Freeing yourself into an abstract world as we will be forced to see things in a different way. Thursdays, 7:00 – 8:30 pm. January 26 – February 9.

Though no longer used for books or papers, block printing has established itself as an art form in its own right and continues to flourish in the production of greeting cards, posters, and graphic fine art. In this 3-week course students will use linoleum blocks to cut, ink, and print simple designs. We will use basic printing methods: cutting simple designs, inking the block with a brayer, and printing with a burin. Experimenting with more elaborate designs, multiple colors and printing with a simple pressure press. Students will go home with a new appreciation for this time-honored craft and the ability to make & print their own greeting cards at home. GAC Clay Studio. Instructor: Will Tintera.

chalk-pastelPastel Drawing
Mondays, 6:00 – 7:30 pm. January 30 – March 13. No class 2/20.

In this six-week course students will explore the medium of chalk pastel on colored papers to create beautiful landscapes, still life drawings and more. No technical drawing skills are needed to succeed with this medium. You will go home with a number of finished pieces ready to showcase and even frame. Supplies included. Discover the art of fly tying! Merne Judson, a Whitling Farms Pro Instructor with 40 years’ experience will instruct this exciting art form twice a week at the GAC. Each 2-hour class students will start and finish tied flies ready to take home and use. The beginner’s course will take students through each step of how to tie both wet and dry flies. The intermediate/advanced course is suited for the more advanced tier and will introduce techniques and materials to improve their ability to tie more advanced patterns. GAC Adult Art Studio. During these Saturday workshops students will learn about project planning, measurements, sanding, staining and safety. Using these skills students will create projects they can be proud of. Beginners: Mondays, 6:00 – 8:00 pm. March 27 – April 17.
Intermediate/Advanced: Mondays, 6:00 – 8:30 pm. May 1 – June 12. No class 5/29.

Discover the magic of watercolor painting in our Monday beginner’s course. Learn to see like an artist, develop basic drawing and brushstroke techniques while also learning the value of light and shadow to add drama to your paintings. In our Intermediate/Advanced class students will take on more advanced watercolor projects. Students must know proper technique to take this course. This is an opportunity to expand your creativity, to learn more difficult techniques and to learn from fellow artists. blue-bird Getting Loose – Painting Workshop with Cheri Isgreen
Saturday, April 15th
10:00am – 3:00pm (1hour lunch break at noon)

Looking for a way to loosen up your art? Have you ever wondered if you could be successful painting in watercolor? Are you interested in learning some new techniques? This class will offer ideas, suggestions, and methods to create lively compositions in watercolor. You will explore watercolor concepts and techniques to complete two paintings during each workshop. 10am-3pm with an hour lunch break to regroup, critique, and discuss. charcoal-2Charcoal Drawing
Tuesdays, 6:00 – 7:30 pm. May 2 – May 30. No class 5/16.

Join us for a drawing class specific to the classic medium of charcoal. Using toned paper with charcoal and pencils students will learn drawing, 3-D shading, how to create textures while experimenting with four different kinds of subject matter; still life, portraits, landscape, and figure. Saturday, May 13th 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Come explore this new medium with us! Experiment with the movements of alcohol inks on Yupo paper, enjoy the vivid colors, and learn new techniques in painting with alcohol ink. In this workshop, students will be able to complete a set of 4 notecards that would make a great Mother’s Day gift! Appetizers provided in this 4 hour workshop. GAC Adult Art Studio. Feeling stressed out? Struggling with a creative block? Just want to have a good time playing with a variety of artistic media? EMOTE is the program for you! With the intention of encouraging emotional/imaginative wellness through a series of expressive games and activities, this exciting and affordable class features a variety of media in the visual and performing arts. All designed to awaken emotions in your art and encourage mindfulness of the power of psychology in what we create. Black Box Theater.
