Dance Classes and Workshops

From ballet to tap; hip hop to aerial, movers and shakers of all ages and skill levels will find something they enjoy at the Gunnison Arts Center School of Dance! All classes are held in the GAC Dance Studio at 102 S. Main St.

Cancellation and Refund Policy:
The Gunnison Arts Center will issue a full refund for the price of class or workshop registration, minus a $5 administration fee, until the class has begun and will only issue Gunnison Arts Center credit after the class has begun.

All classes have a minimum enrollment of 4 students unless otherwise noted. If the minimum is not met the decision to cancel a class will be made. Some classes have limited enrollment. Students are considered registered only after full payment for the class has been received. GAC active members will receive a 15% discount on class tuition. Pre-registering for a class helps ensure that the course will run.

Scholarships are available for all dance classes, both adult and youth. Visit the Education Tab and scholarships page for more information and how to apply.

Payment Plans:
The GAC offers the option of creating a payment plan to pay for classes throughout the duration of the semester. Please contact Alysa at the GAC to set up a payment plan that works for both your needs and the GAC’s needs. Classes must be paid for in full before the last day of classes.

Rules of the Studio:
There are no street shoes allowed in the studio, only dance shoes that have never been street worn. No food, gum or drinks in the studio (water is okay in a secure container). Please leave jackets, dance bags, shoes/boots, etc. in the bathrooms; there are cubbies in the bathrooms for personal use. The GAC is not responsible for lost/stolen items.

Dress and Shoe Attire:
No street shoes allowed in the Dance Studio. Shoes and dance attire is up to the class’s instructor. The GAC does not have dance shoes or dance clothing for sale.

Youth Dance

First Steps Dance Class ~ Ages 2 – 4
Fridays, 10:00 – 10:45 am.
Session 1: January 27 – March 3
Session 2: March 31 – May 5.

Get your little guy or gal moving in the right direction in this fun, early childhood dance class. Parents are welcome to stay and even join in! Dancers will get to perform in the spring dance showcase. Instructor: Victoria Goedjen. $80/session.

Ballet / Tap ~ Ages 4 – 6:
Mondays 4:15 – 5:15 pm.
Session 1: January 23 – February 27.
Session 2: March 29 – May 1
Instructor: Sophia Kemper. $80/session.

Ballet / Tap ~ Ages 7 – 10:
Wednesdays, 4:15 – 5:15 pm.
Session 1: January 25 – March 1.
Session 2: March 29 – May 3.

This combo dance class will introduce your little dancers to basic ballet vocabulary and techniques for a half hour and fun tapping repetition and combos the last half hour. Dancers will get to perform in the spring dance showcase.

Hip Hop Troupe ~ Ages 5 – 10:
Mondays, 5:15 – 6:15 pm.
Session 1: January 23 – February 27.
Session 2: March 27 – May 1.

Hip Hop Troupe ~ Ages 11 – 15:
Wednesdays, 6:15 – 7:15 pm.
Session 1: January 25 – M arch 1.
Session 2: March 29 – May 3.

Students will learn various beginning hip hop dance moves in a fun filled encouraging group environment while building self-confidence! Basics of all styles of hip hop will be incorporated such as street hip hop, break-dancing, poppin’ and lockin’. All levels of dancers can join! This troupe will get to perform in the spring dance showcase.

Teen and Adult Dance Classes

Adult Tap Level 1
Session 1: Wednesdays, 7:15 – 8:15 pm. January 25 – March 1.
Session 2: Tuesdays, 7:30 – 8:30 pm.

Have you always wanted to learn to tap? Here is your chance in this beginning adult tap class. Learn the essentials and basics of tap dancing while exploring combinations and routines. Open to dancers ages 16 – adults. Instructor: Jen Myhr. $80/session.

Adult Tap Level 2
Session 1: Mondays, 7:15 – 8:15 pm. January 23 – February 27.
Session 2: Wednesdays, 7:15 – 8: 15 pm. March 29 – May 3.

Take your tapping toes to the next level in this intermediate tap class. Learn intricate rhythms and combos while having a great time dancin’ and making new friends. Open to dancers ages 16 – adults. Instructor: Jen Myhr. $80/session.

Adult Hip Hop
Session 1: Mondays, 8:15 – 9:15 pm. January 23 – February 27.
Session 2. Wednesdays, 8:15 – 9:15 pm. March 29 – May 3.

Have fun in this energetic and lively style of dance. Learn various beginning hip hop moves to your favorite hip hop songs. Open to dancers 16 – Adults. Instructor: Jen Myhr. $80/session.

Improv / Lyrical
Mondays, 6:15 – 7:15 pm. January 23 – February 27.

This authentic improvisation and lyrical dance class will cover creating new movement while finding a deeper way to connect to music, feeling and personal inspiration. Open to all levels of dancers ages 16 – adults. Instructor: Sophia Kemper. $80/session.

Tuesdays, 7:30 – 8:30 pm. January 24 – February 28.

This non-formal fusion of group dances have been derived and borrowed from a range of American dance backgrounds. Learn how to feel the music, dance with a partner and meet new people. Instructor: Katie Gravel. $75/couple, $50/individual.

Thursdays, 7:30 – 8:30 pm. January 26 – March 2.

The lindy hop is an American dance that evolved in Harlem in the 1920s and 1930s. Many styles of dance have been derived from lindy hop, the most popular being swing dance. Join this fun social dance night, no experience necessary! Instructor: Katie Gravel. $75/couple, $50/individual.

Tuesdays, 7:30 – 8:30 pm. March 30 – April 20.

Learn the Dominican style of merengue dance and music. Feel the vibes and lively beats of this popular Latin American dance style. Stay tuned for a Salsa dance class this summer! Spanish speakers welcome. Instructors: Fabrianna and Frank Ayala. $75/couple, $50/individual.

Tuesdays & Thursdays, 12:15 – 1:00 pm. January 24 – May 4. (No Classes 3/20 – 3/24.)

Zumba is perfect for everybody and every BODY! Each class is designed to be a total body workout, combining all elements of fitness, through fun Latin and world rhythms and dances. Boost your energy and build your balance and strength for a serious dose of awesome each class. Instructor: Barron Farnell.

Dance AND Series Events

Rum & Rhythms of Latin America
Saturday, February 18. 7:00 – 9:30 pm.

Explore the lively and upbeat dance styles of Latin America in this new dance AND Series Event. Begin by learning the basics steps of Merengue and Salsa and finish the evening feeling that shimmy and a twirl! Sip on a selection of rum inspired cocktail drinks and enjoy Latin inspired apps while learning these dance styles. No dance experience necessary!
